In January of 2021, I decided I was going to start really focusing on my skin and getting it looking the best that it can! There for sure isn’t a one size fits all but read more to see what helped me get the best skin i’ve had at 32 since elementary school!

five ways to get clear skin for free!
- drink a ton of water: the first thing i did start drinking a tonnnnn of water. This really helped minimize my breakouts and keep my skin fresh and clean! Drinking water balances the water and oil content on your facial skin, preventing the buildup of excess oil and resulting in fewer clogged pores and breakouts. Experts recommend drinking 3/4 gallons of water per day!
- ditch the makeup: when I decided I wanted to work on my skin, I decided to stop wearing makeup 95% of the time to let my skin breathe. Makeup messes with the skin’s natural renewal process, which means that your new skin cells can’t grow through the germs. Wearing too much makeup, or not cleaning your makeup brush often enough, can result in clogged pores and breakouts. They say that not wearing makeup helps your skin feel and look younger, while helping to reduce wrinkles and increase the skin’s elasticity! I’ve noticed nothing but good things since I cut out makeup!
- limit your sugar intake & eat healthy: I always try to keep a healthy diet and limit the amount of sugar i’m eating. Sugar causes a variety of inflammation-linked skin conditions, including acne & sagging skin. It can also lead to the early aging of the skin. If you’re looking for some recipes to help you maintain a healthy diet, here are some of my favorite breakfast, lunch and dinner recipes!
- wash your hands & face after working out: when you’re working out, the sweat, oil and bacteria can lead to congestion and breakouts if you don’t remove it. Plus, you’re also exposed to other people’s sweat and bacteria, so cleansing afterwards is essential to keep your skin healthy, clear and glowing!
- cut out alcohol: As you know, i’ve been sober for years and one of the benefits is healthy skin! Alcohol dehydrates your body, including the skin, and this happens every time you drink. This can cause your skin and eyes to look dull. But stopping drinking could help your skin’s hydration. Remember, moderation is key and if you’re going to drink, try to choose low-sugar drinks or bring your mio with you to flavor your drinks the healthier way.

My best advice to you is to find a minimalist skincare routine that works for you!
I really took on a minimalist skincare approach. I don’t think you need a tun of products. find what works for you and stick to it. I can’t live without a cleanser, toner and zit spot treatment. Here are a few of my faves!
step one: cleanser
I love the colleen rothschild gentle cleanser for the morning and their cleansing balm at night!

Use code EMERSON20 for 20% off colleen rothschild & code CLASSYCLEANCHIC for 15% off at tula!
step two: toner
I’ve been using the matcha tea toner from colleen rothschild for years, day and night. I’ve recently started using the acid potion from moon juice and I love it! Whenever I need a little extra exfoliation, I use the peel pads from colleen rothschild. I’ve been using these babies since 2020 and I’ll never go back. It’s so satisfying (+ gross) to see everything that comes off of my skin after a day.

Use code EMERSON20 for 20% off colleen rothschild & code CLASSYCLEANCHIC for 15% off moon juice!
step three: serum

step four: moisturizer
I alway keep my face moisturized, especially when I wake up and before I go to bed. When looking for a moisturizer, look for SPF to keep your skin hydrated and protected. Even if I’m inside I have been putting on an SPF because the sun can get you anywhere! This is another thing I have been focusing on – protecting my face from the sun. I pretty much always have a baseball cap on when I’m out in the sun.

step five: zit cream
Whenever I had any little breakouts, I would use this spot treatment from august + monroe. I usually put it on before bed so I don’t rub it in, but it is color-changing so if you plan on putting makeup on over it, just rub it in and it will blend with your skintone!

A few more of my little secrets!
I love these chin tightening straps from amazon! They’re affordable and really work! I’ll put these on a clean face whenever I feel like doing a little selfcare.
One of the best things I did for my nighttime routine was invest in a satin pillow case, like this one from kitsch! Not only do these pillowcases help to prevent acne, they also reduce frizz, protect your lashes and keep your hair healthy!
use code EMERSON for 25% off at kitsch!
This bloom greens powder is a great addition to my daily routine! It’s awesome for bloating and digestion, helps boost your energy and immune system and helps keep your skin healthy and glowing!
I’ve also been going to joules medspa for over a year now, for skinpen treatments and botox!
Skinpen is a micro needling tool that helps to improve your skin by stimulating natural production of collagen. I have been getting tons of compliments on my skin recently while I am not wearing makeup and I can give all the credit to this procedure! It is recommended in a series of 3 for optimal results done every 4-6 weeks. It feels like a little massage because I use numbing on my face. This procedure helps shrink pores, even texture, diminish acne scarring and smooths skin. It also helps with dark spot unevenness. You can read more here!

You can notice the minimized pores and smoother complexion. Specifically if you look at my forehead there was a lot of texture on my skin that is now gone.
I think the biggest misconception with Botox is that your face will be completely frozen. Which is not the case at all. Small doses of Botox help to prevent your wrinkles from getting deeper and sticking around. I’ve been getting treatments to help get rid of static lines. You can read more here!

If you’re in the Minneapolis area, you can get get a deal for mentioning my name at Joules Medspa & I can’t recommend them enough!
Let me know if you use any of these products or if you have a favorite that you think we should try in the comments!
