What I Learned On My Journey To Healthy Hair

In the pursuit of beauty, few things rival the allure of healthy hair. Yet, achieving it isn’t always straightforward. Our hair faces a barrage of challenges daily, from environmental stressors to styling habits, which can leave it dry, brittle, and lackluster. But fear not! With the right knowledge and care, you can unlock the secrets to vibrant, healthy hair that turns heads and boosts confidence. Trust me, I have learned a lot on this journey and hope to pass along some tips to help you do the same!

I spent years bleaching my hair, and while I loved the platinum look, I had no idea the damage I was causing. Over-coloring my hair led to lots of damage, including dryness, brittleness, breakage, and loss of shine. Here’s how over-coloring can damage your hair:

  1. Chemical Stripping
  2. Weakening of Hair Structure
  3. Altering Hair Texture
  4. Damage to Scalp
  5. Color Fading
  6. Increased Porosity
  7. Over-Processed Hair
  8. Loss of Elasticity

Overall, over-coloring your hair can lead to a range of damaging effects, affecting both its appearance and health. I’ve been on a journey of repairing and gaining back healthy hair. I have learned that it’s essential to be mindful of how often you color your hair and to prioritize its health by using gentle, nourishing hair care products and techniques.

Repairing damaged hair and growing it out healthy and strong requires consistent care and attention. Here are some tips I have implemented into my routine to help me (and hopefully you) achieve that:

  • Trim regularly: Regular trims help to get rid of split ends, preventing them from traveling up the hair shaft and causing further damage.
  • Use a gentle shampoo and conditioner: Look for products that are sulfate-free and formulated for damaged hair. These products are less likely to strip away natural oils and further damage the hair.
  • Deep condition regularly: Incorporate deep conditioning treatments into your hair care routine. These treatments help to moisturize and nourish the hair, repairing damage and improving overall health.
  • Limit heat styling: Heat styling tools like flat irons and curling wands can cause damage to the hair shaft. Try to limit their use and always use a heat protectant spray when styling with heat.
  • Air dry when possible: Let your hair air dry instead of using heat styling tools whenever possible. This helps to reduce damage and breakage caused by heat.
  • Protect your hair from the sun: UV rays can damage hair, leading to dryness and breakage. Wear a hat or use products with UV filters to protect your hair when spending time in the sun.

  • Avoid tight hairstyles: Tight hairstyles like ponytails and braids can cause stress on the hair shaft, leading to breakage and damage. Opt for looser styles to reduce strain on your hair.
  • Eat a healthy diet: Your hair’s health is influenced by your diet. Make sure to eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and proteins to support healthy hair growth.
  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep your hair hydrated from the inside out. Dehydration can lead to dry, brittle hair.
  • Consider supplements: If your diet lacks certain nutrients essential for hair health, consider taking supplements like biotin, vitamin E, and omega-3 fatty acids after consulting with a healthcare professional.
  • Protect your hair while sleeping: Use a silk or satin pillowcase or headwrap to reduce friction on your hair while you sleep, preventing breakage and split ends.
  • Be patient: Repairing damaged hair and growing it out healthy takes time. Be patient and consistent with your hair care routine, and you’ll start to see improvements over time.

By following these steps and giving your hair the care and attention it deserves, you can gradually repair the damage caused by over-coloring and restore your hair to its former health and beauty. Just remember that this is a process that takes time and consistency. Stick with it and I promise you will see that the results are worth it!

Check out some of my favorite tools I have been using recently. This showerhead is a game changer! I could tell a difference in the softness and texture of my hair after just one wash. I have also been sleeping with a silk headwrap at night. This helps keep my curls intact overnight while also reducing frizz. Of course, we can’t forget about the extensions. I had to cut a good length off my damaged hair when I began this process and have been utilizing extensions as a way to help achieve the look I want while I continue to grow out my hair.

My journey to healthy hair has been a transformative experience filled with valuable lessons and self-discovery. Through patience, self-awareness, consistency, and self-care, I’ve not only achieved healthier hair but also gained a deeper appreciation for myself and the beauty of imperfection. I hope these tips will also help you on your journey to healthy hair. Have any more tips you would like to share? Add them down in the comments!
